"reputable breeders" are fine if you are looking for a champion but many people just want a good quality dog as a companion or even for showing but can not afford the costs invvolved. Your freind is thinking about these people. people like me who send my kids to community college instead of university, drive an econimy car and know at least 500 ways to cook ground beef.
Not everybody can afford to get a dog from a "reputable breeder nor want to get a pound puppy. Nothing wrong with responsable hobby breeding.
